i think there are three themes revealed in the novel great expectations.

1.women are fragile. that is not because those women are in lack of will, but that they need surviving abilities and that of self-survival and struggle against destiny. they always turn to men. that can be called “hero saving the beauty”. this notion originated in the greek tales but is still adopted successively. the only difference between them lies in the plot and structure. estella is adopted and trained to break men?s hearts by miss havisham. havisham revenges men and marries estella to an unworthy guy though pip deeply loves estella. nothing can be bitterer than see his lover married to another guy for a man. pip really fell into the despair of losing estella. however, estella suffers a lot and begins to regret for her initial choice for her spouse and begins to treasure

2.facing destiny, women are physically and intellectually inferior to men. actually it does not mean they have an inferior intelligence, but that it seems so. or we can say that both men and women have the same potential of intelligence, but women never show a lot. god creates everyone equally, but not everyone is granted the same approaches to success or achievements. women are restricted to families, which restricts

them from showing a lot. they can cook food well, which is one standard for their excellence but not the one for male. the novel goes this way since it implies the male consciousness. the ordinary intelligence of women in marriage and love is exposed completely. havisham is abandoned on her wedding day, but she keeps the room like the day she got married, while on the other hand she tries every means to revenge men. bearing these two conflictive thoughts in mind, havisham certainly fails to live her own life out of the control or influence from male.

3.the discipline for women ]. a feminist de bufuwa says: “one is called woman because she is ?made? not ?born?.” culturally woman is the product of society and the result of its strict restrictions. those women who do not obey the disciplines are not regarded as gracious or good women by social criteria, which emphasizes on families, the responsibilities for their husbands and their dependence on men. in great expectations, estella and havisham?s misfortunes are closely attached to love and marriage. they try to revenge men and but they cannot leave men. estella leaves pip, but at last she comes back to him. and havisham keeps thinking about her marriage day and her husband. so in dickens?s novel, women are decent on surface, but failed in heart.

every period has an outstanding feature, which make descendants linger in mind. to learn this novel can help us in understanding better women?s efforts to stand up. society presses public to believe that male plays a dominant role. havisham can symbolize a feminist but what then? she needs a male accompany. her ending somewhat is tragic but estella harvests through a long time, but anyway she wins in depending man and leading a pleasant life.

my impression of "dr. jekyll and mr. hyde"

recently i read a book named dr.jekyii and mr. hyde. it is a quite interesting book. this novel is written by the famous scottish author, robert louis stevenson. it is about a london lawyer named john gabriel utterson who investigates strange behavior in his old friend, dr. hey jekyll and the evil edward hyde.

dr. hey jekyll was a scientist who was always considered as a serious, hard-working doctor. behind this character, however, he was an active, fun-loving young man-about-town. he had spent most of his life trying to remove the devil from his heart which was not fitting for a man of his stature. after much thought, he finally decided to create a drug that could give each side of his character its own separate face and body. then, he bravely drank the drug and successfully transformed himself into the smaller, younger, cruel, remorseless, evil edward hyde. dr. jekyll enjoyed his secret very much--but not for ever after. as time went by, mr. hyde grew in power. after taking the drug repetitively, dr. jekyll no longer needed to use the drug to relief his devil.eventually, mr. hyde grew so strong that dr. jekyll had to rely on the drug to remain himself.he first injured a child in street, then beat sir danvers to death for no reason. realizing he would soon become hyde forever, dr. jekyll left behind a confession and commit suicide.

for most of the book, i believed that the story concerns two people. dr jekyll who born in a rich family , is a kindly old doctor, with two very old friends, utterson and lanyon. mr. hyde is a smaller, younger man, with a capacity of evil and repels everyone he meets. and yet, despite being apparent opposites in so many ways, there are clear links between the two men. hyde gives the family of a child he has beaten a cheque signed by jekyll. hyde has a key to the back entrance to jekyll’s house, and hyde can come and go at will and give orders to jekyll’s servants. and when dr.jekyii’s friend, utterson received a letter from hyde saying that he is going away for ever, but realizing that it is in jekyll’s handwriting. finally, the narrator tells the truth about the two men. they are one and the same.

i learnt that robert louis stevenson is a gothic author through the internet.

gothic authors recognize that all human beings have the capacity for goodness, but all people also have a shadow side, and it is the degree to which one sublimates and controls his or her darker impulses that prevents one from becoming consumed with evil. in his novel, the central problem of dr. jekyll is that he cannot accept this truism about humanity and, particularly, about himself. actually, the two sides of a person have well defined power and responsibility, mutual coordination and restraint. they know the appropriate time and situation to behave themselves. you can be serious at work with a character likes dr. jekyll and have your private life as crazy as you want. this is nothing to be ashamed of, but dr. jekyll didnt realize it at that time. everyone plays different roles in different situations. we neednt to shame about it. the double-dealers can always gain advantage from both sides and live well.

when dr. jekyll took the drug and devided into two person, this tragedy is waiting to happen. human will be destroyed not by natural disaster but the evil inside human. but how can we deal with this serious problem, the inner conflict of good and evil? first, we should correct the idea that we can kill off the evil side. instead, we should acknowledge it, and then make the good side power by developing good habits step by step. we are educated citizens living in this beautiful planet. we are the hope in the future. we know what is right and what is wrong, and we have the obligations to regulate our behavior in accordance with the code of ethics. when we are doing things, we should consider whether it is morally right. make this consideration a habit. second, pay more attention to self-cultivation and adjusting attitude at any time in any place. in the course of human events, we have experienced the dark days of hard-working, when people work the whole day and the whole night like a crow without a short time of rest. such a horrible life has gone forever. third, release bad emotions as soon as possible. unhealthy emotions can not be avoided, but we can release it through some healthy ways, such as running, playing sports, talking with others and so on. the more depression we hide, the more split personalities we tend to have. it is just the stimulation of the depression that causes many people totally become evil. last but not least, don’t emphasize too much on the gain and loss of personal interests. in this colorful world, there exist various kinds of personal interests, especially pecuniary interest.

i really learn a lot from the book “dr jekyll and mr. hyde”. it is a warning for us to review our behavior. the future is bright, but road is tortuous. in order to grow healthily, we’d better drop the bad behavior and bad attitude. every thing can be settled, only if we have the determination.

dickens is not a writer disdaining women. instead he loves, respects and takes care of them, however, in his novels, he unconsciously degrades women and puts them inferior to men. this time i want to adopt great expectations to evidence my thesis.

two reasons account for this. the victorian age pushed women back to home and indulge in their obedience and docility. an able woman today may be sung highly as a model of independence but male dominated that period even a little bit of rebellion from female world is regarded as the despising of sacred belief. the other one lies in that dickens, as a well-known and truly successful writer, composes various and popular works. as a male, his achievement sounds great, which belittles the rest of his contemporaries, let alone the women. his success made him believe in men’s great ability.

there are three aspects in this novel that i believe this kind of thought of dickens is revealed.

the first one is that women are fragile. “ weaker, your name is woman.” two hundreds ago, shakespeare authored to the world this unprecedented sentence in hamlet. later, dickens followed this great instruction unconsciously in creating his own works. that is not because that women are in lack of will but that they need surviving abilities and that of self-survival and struggle against destiny. they always turn to men. that can be called “hero saving the beauty”.this notion originated in the greek tales but is still adopted successively. the only difference between them lies in the plot and structure. estella is adopted and trained to break men’s hearts by miss havisham. havisham revenges men and marries estella to an unworthy guy though pip deeply loves estella. nothing can be bitterer than see his lover married to another guy for a man. pip really fell into the despair of losing estella. however, estella suffers a lot and begins to regret for her initial choice for her spouse and begins to treasure

then comes my second point. facing destiny women are physically and intellectually inferior to men. actually it does not mean they have an inferior intelligence but that it seems so. or we can say that both men and women have the same potential of intelligence, but women never show a lot. god create everyone equally but not everyone is granted the same approaches to success or achievements. they are restricted to families, which restrict them from showing a lot. they can cook food well, which is one standard for their excellence but not the one for male’s world. the novel goes this way since it implies the male consciousness. the ordinary intelligence of women in marriage and love is exposed completely. havisham is abandoned on her wedding day, but she keeps the room like the day she got married, while on the other hand she tries every means to revenge men. bearing these two conflictive thoughts in mind, havisham certainly fails to live her own life out of the control or influence from male though she se

the discipline for women is my third point. a feminist de bufuwa says, ‘one is called woman because she is “made” not “born”’.culturally woman is the product of society and the result of its strict restrictions. those women who do not obey the disciplines are not regarded as gracious or good women by social criteria, which emphasizes on families, the responsibilities for their husbands and their dependence on men. in great expectations, estella and havisham’s misfortunes are closely attached to love and marriage. they try to revenge men and but they cannot leave men. estella leaves pip but at last comes back to him, and havisham keeps thinking about her marriage day and her the other part, who should come that day, in that gloomy room though she on the other hand revenges men. so tracing the track of a decent woman is the priority for women, as revealed in dickens’ novel, otherwise tribulation falls.

every period has an outstanding feature, which make descendants linger in mind. victorian age passed long ago, but its typical rules for women still work to some extent. to learn this novel can help us in understanding better women’s efforts to stand up. society presses public to believe in notion that male play a dominant role. even a feminist will drop into that swirl as she sees more and thinks more. havisham can symbolize a feminist but what then? she needs a male accompany. her ending somewhat is tragic but estella harvests through a long time, but anyway she wins in depending man and leading a pleasant life.

the above is what i get from the novel in the textbook and to conclude my opinion in one sentence, i should say that women depend on men. that is not my opinion, but what i get. i have to mention that again since i myself am one part of that group and i am not willing to take a subordinate role in both family and society.

the thinking of jane eyre

during the winter vacation i read a book named jane eyre, and i did think and get a lot. after i closed the covers of the book, i felt like having a long journey of the spirit. jane eyre, has left us so much to recall and to think.

jane eyer was a born resister, whose parents went off when she was very young, and her aunt, the only relative she had, treated her very badly. actually, jane wasn’t pretty, and of course, the ordinary appearance didn’t make others feel good of her, even her own aunt felt disgusted with it. and some others even thought that she was easy to look down on and to tease, so when miss ingram met jane eyre, she seemed quite contemptuous, for that she was obviously much more prettier than ‘the plain and ugly governess’. but as the little governess had said: ‘do you think, because i am poor, obscure, plain, and little, i am soulless and heartless? you think wrong!’ this is the idea of equality in jane eyre’s mind. so, finally she had the courage to express her love to mr rochester. she said:"do you think i can watch another woman become your bride?do you think i`m a machine, whitout feelings?do you think, because i`m small and poor and plain, that i have no soul and no heart?well, you`re wrong! i have as much soul and heart as you.it is my spirit that speaks to your spirit!we are equal in the sight of god!” her idea of equality and self-respect impress us so much and let us feel the power inside her body.

god hadn’t given her beauty and wealth, but instead, god gave her a kind mind and a thinking brain. when we think of this girl, what she gave us was not a pretty face or a transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality.

jane eyre

jane was an orphan. she lived in her aunt’s house. her aunt didn’t like her, so she took her to an orphanage. jane studied in the orphanage and learned a lot of things. when jane grew up, she worked as a governess in a big family and taught the child in this family. bit by bit, jane and her master mr rochester fell in love with each other. but the master had a wife. she was a madwoman. when jane knew this, she left her teaching post.but she could not forget her master. so, at last, she visited her master. at that time, her master’ house was burnt down and he became handicapped. his mad wife died in the big fire. jane decided to get married with him and look after him.

jane eyre found his real love and she was a happy woman. the most important thing is that jane believed everybody were equal.

in my mind, though a person’s beautiful face can make others once feel that is attractive .if his or her mind isn’t the same beautiful as the appearance, such as beauty cannot last , when others find that the beauty which had charmed them was only a falsity, it’s not true,

they will not like the person any more. for a long time, only a person’s great virtue, a noble soul, a beautiful heart can be called as an everlsting beauty, just as kahill gibran had said, that ‘beauty is a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted'.there are great differences in our souls, and from that, we can know that whether a man is noble or ordinary, and even obscure, that is, whether he is beautiful or not.
