ladies and gentlemen, your honored judges

when you're leaving the hotel will you look into a mirror and adjust yourclothes in front of it. but if it were a black mirror what could we get? withtechnology developing at a rocket speed, the black mirror is everywhere, on thescreens of our cellphones, our computers and our televisions. in our daily life,we are always facing black mirrors. however, we can hardly see ourselves in it.perhaps sometimes we can, but only as a colourless face. technology has broughtgreat convenience of communication for information but at the same time, it haswebbed our thought.

several years ago, an article named “is google making us stupid” got quitepopular on the internet. at that time, i thought it was just alarmism but now ifind it much worse because technology is not just making us stupid but alsoweakening our independent thought. about half year ago, i was invited to judge adebate competition. when i arrived at the competition room, i noticed it was anold and classic topic, so i was expecting those players to give me some new andspecial ideas. unfortunately, when the game continued, i found all theviewpoints and examples they used were totally the same as the previouscompetition. the only fun during the competition was to predict what they wouldsay. as far as i was concerned, they were not making a debate but replaying avideo. obviously, they just spoke for the black mirror.

debate was born as an area that we use our own thought to defend ouropinion. however due to high technology, all these "my opinion is" in thecompetition are actually "the opinion i have found is". that is , really, atragedy because all human dignity lies in thought which has been weakened byconvenient technology.

truth to be told, debate is not the only example. in every field, we canget whatever information or opinions we want from the almighty black mirror. asa consequence, how to restructure human thought has become not only importantbut also necessary in today's technologically advanced world. and the answer ishumanism which stands for human independent special mind. just as humanism freedpeople's thought from the force of religion in the renaissance, i'm waiting inthe hope that it can rescue the ideology trapped in high technology. humanism isa lodestar guiding us to the era that anyone can form their own opinion aboutanything but not just speak the words from the internet.

ladies and gentlemen, i'm not an anti-technologist but i do care aboutthose disadvantages that technology brings to our present life. with the laundrymachine, we don't know how to hand wash clothes clean. with electronic addressbooks, we can even hardly remember our girlfriends or boyfriends' phone numbers.and now with a convenient way to get opinion, we seldom think with our own mind.if so, human is only a reed, the feeblest thing in nature. so follow the spiritof humanism, have an independent mind, so that we can be colorful in those blackmirrors.

my major is . my job is to discover or create new drugs for many diseases like cancer. you know that laboratory is the place where miracles happen. believe it or not. what i do can save millions of peoplesquo;s lives. for a long time, what challenges me is how to commercialize research. you come up with a great idea, but moving that new discovery from theory to practice or from the lab to the marketplace, that's really a big job. thatsquo;s what we should focus on. we need to act with a sense of urgency-to study and work and create as if the fate of the country depends on us-because it does. it depends on us. thank you!

our new president xi jinping came up with the dream of the chinese nation's rejuvenation on december 29, 20xx. he said: the chinese dream is a dream of national strength prosperity and people's happiness. our people have an ardent love for life. they wish to have better education, more stable jobs, more income, greater social security , better medical and health care, improved housing conditions and better environment, they want their children to grow well, have ideal jobs and lead a more enjoyable life. to meet their desire for a happy life is our mission."

2he also expounded his views of realizing

our great dream. he said : to realize the dream, china must take the road of socialism with chinese characteristics. the country must also foster the chinese spirit,in which patriotism and the spirit of reform and innovation play a core role, and unite 1.3 billion people of all ethnicities into a great source of strength.

3i always ask myself what

can i do for our great chinese dream ? as we all know that the wiser the youths are ,the wiser the nation will be;the wealthier the youths are ,the wealthier the nation will be;the stronger the youths are ,the stronger the nation

will be. here the word wealthy means: enriching our knowledge reserve. as a new generation of science, every one here shouldering the great historical mission of ma-ki-ng china powerful and strong. you may say that this may exaggerate our role, but i want to say you are wrong. if i am a little screw our great dream may be a multifunction and complex machine. through this example i just want to say i am very tiny but i am indispensable .

i believe that as long as all of our university students unite together and perform our own functions that study hard in school and work hard after we graduating from university . we must be able to achieve our great dream meanwhile enrich ourselves unwittingly!

president xi also said:we are closer than in any other time of history to the goal of rejuvenating the chinese nation. we are more confident and capable of achieving this goal than in any other period of history,"

lets us unite together to realize chinese nation's great rejuvenation to struggle!

east and west have met

runner-up: rui cheng gang, foreign affair college

honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen:

kipling said:" east is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet!" but now, a century later, they have met.

they have met in business. they have met in education. they have met in the arts.

some would argue that these meetings leave us with a choice between east and west ,but i believe the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. we can make western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. we can enjoy the best of all worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.

but, do western styles and values threaten our identity?

history makes it easy for us to think so-perhaps too easy.

some people seem to think that adopting western customs, such as a bride wearing white-which has long been a color of mourning in china, instead of the traditional chinese red for her wedding, is another submission to foreign intervention,--a betrayal of our heritage, they say.

they fear that as we become "globalized", we will no longer be chinese.

i do not agree.

history teachers that a strong and confident nation is at ease in hearing from the outside world.

the wedding of eastern and western cultures, whether in white gowns or red, brings us variety.

it is a rich banquet of special foods from all over the world.

as an amateur gourmet of chinese cuisine, our superb flavours delight me.

but my chinese taste appreciates food from any land.

i even allow the convenience of mcdonald's a place in my life without giving up my good taste.

my grandfather taught me to hum tunes of beijing opera from the time i was very young; they are deep in my spirit, part of my soul.

i love beijing opera, because it always reminds me of who i am.

but i am also a fan of modern pop music, the no.1 fan of spice girls on campus.

of course, it goes far beyond food, music and dance. it goes into values and ways of thinking about the world.

once upon a time, or so my teacher told me, a chinese boy and an american girl had a squabble.

both wanted to keep a bunny rabbit they had found in the garden.

surely you've seen a rabbit sunning himself in the grass.

nothing is more lovable, nothing more natural. no wonder they wanted him. the chinese boy played his er-hu. happiness and joy, longing and passion, filled the air. the little rabbit swayed gently and began to move his ears in the direction of the music. he liked what he heard.

the girl then took out her violin and played it to produce beautiful melodies of her own.

the rabbit began to bounce in her direction.

so intent were the children on their own music that neither paid the other any attention.

the competing melodies confused the little rabbit and he did not know which way to turn .unable to attract the little creature, both children gave up ;they walked away, in different directions, leaving the rabbit. . .alone.

but, what if they listened ,what if they really heard each other's music, instead of always playing their own tunes?

when i hear the music of a violin ,rich with the joys of men and women who came together and sang and danced.. . i hear echoes of the music of the grass lands, of the hills, of the rivers...of my own native land.

is music mine and yours, or is it ours?

what i want to hear is the er-hu and the violin played together, in rhythm and in tune. together, we can produce new and beautiful music, rich with textures and sounds that can only be made in harmony.

the rabbit sits in the grass in the ever-warming sun. waiting for us to play, waiting for the symphony to begin.

will he have to wait forever? the choice is ours . thank you.

i have a question for you. squo;do you know how to breathe?squo; okay, i know what you are thinking now, girl, are you kidding me? everybody knows how to breathe. actually, if i were you sitting down in there one year ago, i would think, how did she make it to the final?

alright, seriously speaking, what i am talking about is the art of breathing, and itsquo;s about breathing in a yoga way: peacefully and always under control. what it reveals is the real essence of perseverance, in order to achieve, sometimes, you need to wait. and when it comes to things you really want in life, it is as hard as it could possibly be.

for me, singing is a life thing. when i am singing on the stage, i feel whole-heartedly involved, and the self-fulfillment it renders is inexplicably thrilling. but with all the realistic problems i need to face in life, all those i want seem too far to be true– so far that i am terrified that i will never ever be able to get there and that gradually i will be carried away by the currents and torrents of life. isquo;ve been drowned into this ambivalence for so long. now, with a refined perspective towards self-realization, i am waiting, in a graceful posture, and knowing that i am going to get there. and on this, i should say, i owe yoga a thank-you.

i still remember, about one year ago, i attended a yoga course for the very first time. and to tell you the truth, i went there for a nice figure. however, after practicing for some time, i discovered that there was an ineffable inner-strength burgeoning sneakily in me while i totally focused. in order not to let go this significant power, i started to picture all i wanted in my mind while i was fully concentrating, for i believe the wings of imagination could make things possible. i learned to breathe with my dreams, shaping the eagerness into this elegant gesture of persisting.

and now, if you ask me what exactly is the art of breathing, i would say it is indeed the art of living. it combines the search of balance, the grace of patience, and the awareness of appreciation.

so even though feelings are tied up with life routines, i could still hold onto that free ego which i have always adored: the girl who is singing under the spotlight, with all her heart and soul; the girl who is persevering with all she believes in and always feels grateful for what has been bestowed on her.

that girl is now standing right here in front of you, hoping that you are all as lucky as she is, living with dreams and love. no matter how tough things get, i tell myself, i tell myself that, every single thing i am doing now is every step closer to that very moment of my trajectory, just like every yoga breath to every blossom moment of my life.

hi, everyone. as we all know, many great inventions have brought greatchanges to our life. i think we students can also invent something.

today i'm glad to be here to talk about what i'd like to invent - a chairthat's good for students' health. it will be made of wood. there will be twosensors in it -- one on the seat, and the other on the back of the chair. whenthe student doesn't sit straight, the chair will remind him .if he sits on thechair for over one hour ,it will make a noise. it won't stop until the studentstands up and leaves.

it will be a useful invention, won't it ?

thank you!

i have a dream that one day every vally shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

wow, what a dream it has been for martin luther king. but the changing world seems telling me that people gradually get their dreams lost somehow in the process of growing up, and sometimes i personally find myself saying goodbye unconsciously to those distant childhood dreams.

however, we meed dreams. they nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality. they keep us going. most successful people are dreamers as well as ordinary people who are not afraid to think big and dare to be great. when we were little kids, we all dreamed of doing something big and splashy, something significant. now what we need to do is to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality. however, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how to translate these dreams into actions. well, just start with concrete objectives and stick to it. donsquo;t let the nameless fear confuse the eye and confound our strong belief of future. through our talents, through our wits, through our endurance and through our creativity, we will make it.

hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow. so my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today.
